Laughter Is Healing

Laughter Is Healing

When I was studying for my health science degree, one of the required readings was a book called, “Anatomy Of An Illness” by Norman Cousins. When Norman Cousins was diagnosed with an irreversible disease, he created a program with his physician to use his body’s natural resources for healing. Those resources included laughter, a courageous attitude, and the tenacity to heal. The patient realized that by mobilizing his body’s own natural resources, he might just prove what an effective healing tool the mind can be.

It’s been almost 30 years since I read this book and I can’t stop thinking about it.

I’ve tried meds, acupuncture, supplements, and a strict elimination diet — but could laughter and a positive attitude be even more successful in healing my body?

🔻 HOW is laughter healing?! 🔻

💪 Laughter helps to relax the entire body. A good laugh relieves physical tension and stress, leaving your muscles relaxed for up to 45 minutes after.

💪 Laughter boosts the immune system. It decreases stress hormones and increases immune cells & infection-fighting antibodies, thus improving your resistance to disease.

💪 Laughter triggers the release of endorphins [the body’s feel-good chemicals]. Endorphins promote a sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.

💪 Laughter protects the heart. It improves blood vessel function and increases blood flow throughout the body.

💪 Laughter lightens the heavy load of anger. Nothing diffuses anger and conflict faster than a shared laugh.

Get this… A study in Norway found that people with a strong sense of humor outlived those who don’t laugh as much. The difference was particularly notable for those battling cancer. 🤯

During this “healing season” I’m in, I’ve realized I have true encouragers in my life and I have people in my life who drain my tank. When I spend time with the tank-drainers, I’m exhausted and I find myself getting into a negative mindset about my health.

YOU are in charge of whom you spend time with. I encourage you to spend it with those that lift you up, support you and make you laugh. 💯

⭐️Bonus Tip⭐️ Laughter burns calories. It’s no replacement for hitting the gym, but one study found that laughing for 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calories — which could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year.
