4 Easy Ways to Beat Fatigue

4 Easy Ways to Beat FatigueHave you ever thought that being tired all the time is a normal part of being an adult? It’s not. Well, not exactly. As we age, we don’t have the same type of energy we had when we were kids, but the constant desire to take a nap? That’s something we can change.

Here are some of my best tips for beating fatigue:

1. Consume less sodium. Salty foods can deplete your potassium levels, which can cause you to feel fatigued and exhausted. Remember that there’s a great deal of sodium in processed foods, so check the levels before you indulge in anything that comes from a package.

2. Eat more guacamole. On the flip side of consuming less salt is consuming more potassium. You don’t have to eat guacamole per se, but do try to consume more potassium-rich foods, such as avocados, apricots, dates, asparagus and cauliflower.

3. Get about seven hours of sleep each night. This can be difficult, especially for busy parents, but it’s important to get enough sleep. Try setting a bedtime for yourself and unwinding about an hour before it, so you can be sure to get the most out of what should be sleep time.

4. Pack healthy snacks for the day. Take healthy snacks like nuts, hard boiled eggs or sliced veggies (I like yellow or orange bell peppers) with you to work, so you’ll be less likely to hit the snack machine or make other unhealthy snack choices. Snacking on simple carbohydrates (muffins, scones or a handful of candy) will give you a surge of energy, but then it will inevitably drop, leaving you with that old familiar feeling of fatigue.

BONUS TIP! Get some sunshine! A 2012 Journal of Sleep study found that people who had low blood levels of vitamin D were much more likely to feel tired during the day. Food sources of vitamin D usually aren’t adequate and many people choose to avoid sun exposure for other health reasons, so supplementation becomes important. Ask you physician to test your vitamin d levels and discuss the possibility of supplementation.
